Does Mars have water on its surface?

It’s most likely that Mars used to have water bodies on its surface. However, now the surface of the planet is quite similar to that of deserts on Earth. The water that existed could’ve either frozen underneath or evaporated into space.

There are high chances of some water still being trapped between the carbon dioxide caps.

What would happen if Mars had water?

The planet can be divided into two distinct hemispheres. The Northern one is flat and below the average elevation. So, if the planet were to have water on it, this hemisphere would probably have been one giant ocean. On the other hand, the southern hemisphere would be covered with craters and would remain high and dry.

It’s hard to decipher why this difference between the two hemispheres exists. But, it does seem like that the Southern half is much older in comparison to the Northern one. One can estimate this by taking into count the number of craters in the south and the volcanic activity in the North.

What does the Martian surface look like?

It has been easier to study Mars by comparing its surface to the deserts on our own planet. The Dunes found on its surface are quite similar to the sand dunes found on our planet’s deserts. The only difference being that the Martian Dunes are twice the size of our sand dunes. This is attributed to the weaker gravitational pull experienced by the planet, being just a third of what we experience on Earth.

Other features include crestless sand dunes called Tars. These are fifteen meters tall, other than that, not much is known about them.

These storms are actually what is responsible for it being known as the “Red planet”. Through these storms, rusted iron particles get spread out on the land. Furthermore, the lack of air and weak gravity, these storms continue for months.
