How Do We Know Plate Tectonics Is Real?

Welcome back student, today we will study about something which is deep inside our mother Earth and is also responsible for several changes including the Earth’s movement.

We will study about the plate tectonics.

Plate tectonics: A brief description

Our Earth has three sub layers- Crust, Mantle and Core and these plate tectonics are said to be present somewhere between these layers.

From tall mountains to deep seas our Earth is full of natural beauty, scientists say that the Earth’s surface is continuously moving and these plate tectonics explains the features and movement of Earth’s surface in the present and the past.

How the Plate tectonics theory developed?

Plate tectonics is a theory which was developed from the 1950s to 1970s and it explains about the movement of the continents and this is a continuous movement.

Do you know how many continents we have? Quickly recall them.

This theory was first introduced by scientist Alfred Wegener in 1912.

More about these plates!

There are nine major plates according to the world atlas and there are also several smaller plates.

The force behind plate tectonics is action in the mantle layer of Earth.

This action makes the plate tectonics to push and spread apart at mid-ocean ridges and to sink downwards. Scientists are still studying the mechanisms that move the plates.

Mid-ocean ridges are gaps between tectonic plates.

Do you know plates bumping into each other can also cause mountain ranges for example the Himalayas?

The movements and disturbances in these plates also result in earthquakes.

Isn’t our mother Earth amazing and full of secrets? Well, how many secrets do you know?
