Girl with a Pearl Earring is an oil painting on canvas made by the by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, and is one of his most well-known works. It depicts an imaginary girl in exotic outfit and a big pearl earring. This beautiful work resides in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague.

The artwork ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ represents a young girl in a dark background, the well-defined geometry draws the viewer’s attention exclusively on her. She wears a blue and gold turban, the shiny pearl earring, and a gold jacket. Unlike many of Vermeer’s subjects, (girl reading a letter, milkmaid pouring milk) she is not concentrating on a daily chore. The girl is caught in a random moment, she turns her head behind as if gazing us with her eyes wide and lips parted as if she is about to speak.

However, the girl is not known to us but the artwork tells us many stories. Stories about the girl, her outfit and of course the earring. All these stories are framed in our mind but this picture is the most iconic work by the artist.
