What Happens When You Hold Your Pee?

Relieve yourself.

It is bad for health when you hold your urine frequently and for a really long time but it’s not always life-menacing.

An adult’s bladder can hold up to a half-liter or two full cups of pee, before the need to let it go. The bladder wall is lined with receptors that can measure how full the bladder is, and when it reaches capacity, these receptors send a signal to the brain that it time to urinate.

Most adults control their bathroom urges to pee immediately after receiving the signals or to hold it a bit longer but if you’re not near facilities. If you hold it then the cylindrical sphincters in the bladder close up tightly to keep all of the urine from leaking through the urethra, and holding it much longer can result in urinary retention and escalating risk of infection.

Urinary retention is the inability to empty the bladder, constantly holding the pee can weaken the bladder muscles which can be the cause as you age. The bladder can also become a breeding ground for bacteria if it’s constantly holding abundant urine which can cause infection.

Tycho Brahe, the 16th-century astronomer who demised from a bladder that exploded after holding his pee for too long. Odds are the body will ignore the brain’s attempt to hold in pee and you’ll wet yourself when you hold in for much longer.

In rare cases, bladders do burst, when people who own a vandalized bladder like from a pelvic injury and people who are absolutely fine, in this case, its because the person who consumes alcohol which dampened the signal to the brain indicating to pee right now.

So I deduce that it’s healthier if you just pee immediately when you feel you. Stay curious, stay healthy.
