Once, there was a king named Chandra ruling a small state.
His son was fond of playing with monkeys. So the king acquired a number of monkeys as his pet and looked after their needs.
A flock of sheep was also kept for his son’s amusement.
One of the sheep was fond of food and would daily sneak into the kitchen at any time and devour whatever in sight.
One day, the monkey leader saw this, he said to the other monkeys,
“Well, this is not good. One day the cooks will find him in the kitchen and hit him with anything which come to their hands, or even a burning log.
The woolly back of this sheep may quite easily catch fire.” Then this sheep will start running wildly all over the palace.
The thatched roof and the stable and even the horses will get burnt…
That doctor will tell that monkey’s fat is the best medicine for burns.
Then they will kill us all, and that will be the end of monkeys..
Therefore, let us leave the palace and resort to the forest.”
The younger ones, however, ignored the leader’s advice and replied, “Sir, you’re getting old and forgetful.
We won’t leave this palace with its abundant food. What could we possibly find to eat in the jungle?”
Hearing this, the leader left the palace all alone
Soon his words came true. The sheep was hit with a burning log, it ran throughout the palace and then the stable.
The monkeys were killed for their fat. When this news reached the leader monkey, he decided to take revenge on the king.
As he was thus thinking and wandering, he came across a lake.
On its banks, he found large footprints, as if of a monster.
He realized that a monster must be hiding in the lake.
He cleverly used a lotus stalk as a straw to drink water from the lake.
While he was thus drinking, the monster appeared out of the lake and said, “Sir, I admire your wisdom.
No one who enters the lake survives. I shall grant you a boon. Tell me, whatever you want.”
The monkey replied, Tell me what you desire,” said the monster.
The monkey asked, “How many people can you eat?” The monster replied, “Thousands! But they must all step into the water.”
The monkey then said, “I have a grudge against the king.
If you lend me your necklace, I can convince the king and his men to enter the lake for hidden treasure.”
The monster agreed and handed over the pearl necklace.
Wearing the necklace, the monkey arrived in the kingdom of Chandra.
The townspeople marveled at its beauty and began to inquire how he obtained it.
The monkey explained, “There’s a lake in the forest… Whoever takes a dip in it is rewarded with a necklace.”
Soon, the king came to hear the story of the necklace.
At one point, he asked the monkey, ‘Is what I hear true?’ The monkey replied, ‘Yes.’
The king took all his followers and led them to the lake.
No sooner, the followers jumped into the lake, the monster ate them all up.
Seeing that his people were dying, the king asked the monkey, “Hey, why do my followers linger?”
The monkey replied, “Merciless king! You destroyed the lives of all my kinsfolk, and now I have taken revenge on you for that!
I spared your life to teach you a lesson.”
Moral: Don’t be excessively greedy.
In the end, the monkey’s clever plan taught the wrongdoers a hard lesson. His revenge wasn’t just sweet—it was smart. The jungle learned that trickery has its price, and respect must be earned. Peace returned, and the monkey proved that wit can be mightier than strength or cruelty.
