Once there was a king who had a terrible temper. He was cruel and treated everyone, even his own family, very harshly.
People in his kingdom did not like him at all. They feared him and showed respect only because they were afraid of his anger.
After ruling for a long time, the king finally passed away. When the news spread, the people in the kingdom rejoiced.
They were so happy that they celebrated with grand festivities throughout the land.
Then, the king’s son was crowned as the new king. The coronation ceremony was held, and the whole kingdom looked festive.
Trumpets were playing, streets were decorated with colorful banners and flags, and canopies were set up outside houses. Bands played joyful music everywhere.
Once the new king was seated on the throne, surrounded by his ministers, chief priests, and teachers, everyone seemed happy.
In one part of the court, a guard was standing and crying.
When the new king saw him crying, he called the guard and asked,
“Guard! Today is a special day when I am becoming the new king. Everyone is happy. But why are you crying? Don’t you want me to be your king?”
Are you crying because of my father, who has passed away?”
The sentry replied, “Mighty king, I apologize for dampening the mood. I am not crying because you have become the new king.
I am not grieving for your father’s death. I am happy that he is no longer with us.
You see, whenever I went up and down the stairs, he would hit my head eight times.
I fear that if he meets Yama, the God of Death, in the same way, he might send him back to earth.
Then, he will start beating me again. That’s why I am crying.”
The king laughed at the sentry’s words and reassured him, saying, “Do not worry!
My father’s body has been cremated with a thousand logs of wood.
His funeral pyre was doused with a hundred pitchers of water.
The place where he was burned has been thoroughly cleansed. Those who pass on to the other world never return.”
The king’s words brought comfort to the sentry. He stopped crying and started serving the new king without any fear.
