In a small town, there lived two peddlers who sold pearl trinkets. One was honest, while the other was a dishonest crook.
One day, they both traveled to a nearby town to sell their items.
In that town stood a large building that had once belonged to a wealthy diamond merchant.
After the merchant lost his fortune, many family members died.
Only a girl and her grandmother survived in Only a girl and her grandmother survived in
The greedy peddler arrived at their home, shouting, “Pearl trinkets for sale!”
The young girl heard him and asked her grandmother, “Please buy me a trinket!”
The grandmother replied, “We are very poor, dear. We can barely afford food. How do we buy a pearl trinket?”
Then the girl remembered an old bowl. “Look, Grandma!” she said excitedly, “Let’s try to trade it for something nice.”
This bowl had once belonged to her great-grandfather and had been forgotten among old things after he passed away.
The bowl had been unused for a long time, so it was quite dirty and black.
The grandmother looked at it carefully but did not realize it was made of gold.
Thinking it might be valuable, she decided to show it to a peddler.
He examined the bowl and scratched the bottom with a needle. He realized it was real gold, worth a lot of money.
He quickly made a plan to trick the old woman and the girl.
Pretending to be angry, he said, “Why did you bring me this bowl? It’s worthless!”
Then he threw it on the floor and left.
Soon after, the honest peddler came down the same street, calling out, “Beads for sale!”
The girl once again asked her grandmother if they could trade the bowl.
The grandmother said, “The first peddler didn’t want it. What can we offer now?”
The girl replied, “But that man was mean. I think this one will take it.”
The grandmother agreed and invited the honest peddler inside. When he saw the bowl, he instantly recognized its true value.
He then told the grandmother, “This bowl is worth thousands of rupees!
I can’t take it for my beads; my entire stock isn’t worth as much.”
Surprised, the grandmother explained, “Another peddler said it was worthless and even got angry, but you seem kind.
Please take it and let my granddaughter choose anything she wants from your collection.”
The honest peddler gave them everything he had: four hundred rupees.
Some goods as well, worth another four hundred rupees in exchange for the bowl, and then he left.
After some time, the greedy peddler returned, pretending to be interested in the bowl again.
He asked the grandmother to show it to him, claiming he would make an offer.
The grandmother replied angrily, “You cheat! You said our bowl was worthless.
We’re glad we didn’t agree to a deal with you. Another peddler informed us of its true value, and we are pleased with what we received.
Hearing this, the greedy peddler became furious, shouting, “I’ve been robbed of my golden bowl!”
In a fit of rage, he threw down his goods, ripped off his shirt, and ran toward the river, where he slipped and drowned.
Meanwhile, the honest peddler returned home and dedicated his life to helping others and doing good deeds.
