There was a king named Visvasena who had a beautiful garden around his palace.
The garden was tended to by a skilled gardener.
The royal festival was approaching, so the gardener planted special flowers in the garden.
When the flowers bloomed, the garden became incredibly beautiful.
Some monkeys also lived in the garden and helped the gardener with their upkeep.
One day, the gardener had to go away urgently for a week. Before leaving, he called the monkeys.
He told them, “Please water the plants, cut the grass, remove the weeds, and trim the plants when necessary.”
The monkeys promised to follow his instructions, and he gave them watering cans before departing.
From the next day, the monkeys started taking care of the garden and watering the plants.
The head monkey had an idea and advised the others, saying, “Let’s be patient and not waste water. I have a solution.
We should uproot the plants, measure the length of their roots, and water them accordingly.
More water for plants with longer roots, and less water for plants with shorter roots.”
The monkeys followed their leader’s advice.
Some monkeys began uprooting the plants, while others measured the roots, watered them accordingly, and then replanted them in the soil.
They watered all the plants in the garden using this method.
At that moment, a wise courtier happened to visit the garden.
When he saw the monkeys engaged in this strange activity, he exclaimed,
“Hey, you foolish creatures! What are you doing to the plants? Who told you to water them like this?”
The monkeys replied, “Our chief, the head monkey, told us to do it this way.”
The wise man said, “If the head monkey, who is supposed to be the most intelligent among you, is so foolish, then it’s no surprise that all of you are foolish too.”
The monkeys were offended and said, “You humans should keep quiet! You are insulting our chief!
How can we know how much water a plant needs if we don’t measure its roots?”
The wise man was left speechless and walked away from the garden, amazed by what he had witnessed.
