Understanding tense is understanding the language of English. That might seem to be an overstatement but it is true. Tense is an important part of English grammar which one needs to master to gain proficiency over the language of English. It is one of the basic yet most important concepts that one must know in order to write correctly.
Tense is used to refer to time while writing a sentence or speaking. It plays a crucial role in English grammar as it denotes the time an action takes place. It can be in the past, present, or in future. Thus, there are three different types of tense;
- Past tense
- Present tense
- Future tense
Past tense is used to talk about an action in the past. Similarly, as the name suggests the present tense refers to the present; an action that is being carried out. The future tense refers to an action or an event that might or might not happen in the future. Scholars argue that there are only two tenses since we use only the present and the past tense more often in day-to-day life. The tenses are then subcategorized into four different types.
This week we bring to you this worksheet for your students/children to practice the use of present tense verb forms. Most of the verbs in English have five (5) basic forms. These are used based on the tense we wish to use in a sentence. For example; If we want to convey that a person, say Ram is walking, we’ll use the present participle verb form of the word ‘walk’ i.e. ‘walking’ in the sentence. (Ram is walking) Thus the verb forms change if we wish to use it in a sentence that requires it.
The following exercises are concerned with educating children about the use of present tense verbs or a verb in its third-person singular present simple tense form. It is to be kept in mind that while using a verb form, one must be cognizant of other rules of grammar too.
Instruct the students to fill in the blank space with suitable verb forms of present tense and circle the correct answer from the given options.
In the following exercises, ask the students to underline the correct past time verb to fill in the space provided.
The next exercises are different from others. Here, the students need to fill in the given space with the correct forms of past verbs.
These exercises would make sure that students understand the concept of tense and the usage of different verb forms in a sentence. Download the worksheet and get started now!
