Converting expanded notation to standard form is a process in which we have to convert the numbers from expanded notation to normal form. It is a very simple process that is built for 4th graders. In the above, we have four exercises, and each exercise has nine queries; for each query, there is a rule that has to be followed.

  • 8 x 1000 + 9 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 6 x 1 =  8936
  • 1 x 10000 + 5 x 1000 + 8 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 2 x 1 = 15,842
  • 2 x 10000 + 4 x 1000 + 7 x 100 + 9 x 10 + 1 x 1 = 24,791
  • 1 x 1000 + 5 x 100 + 2 x 10 + 8 x 1=  1,528
  • 1 x 10000 + 8 x 1000 + 3 x 100 + 6 x 10 + 4 x 1 = 18,364
  • 4 x 100 + 2 x 10 + 5x 1 1= 425
  • 6 x 1000 + 5 x 100 + 1 x 10 + 6= 6,516
  • 1 x 10000 + 1 x 1000 + 5 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 9 x 1= 11,539
  • 7 x 100 + 1 x 10 + 2 x 1=  712

This exercise will help kids improve their basic math calculations. In the above table, there are a total of nine queries, and for each query, the process will be the same. The first thing we need to check is the sign. If we see the multiplication sign (x), we have to multiply the numbers, and if we see the addition sign (+), then we have to add the numbers. At the end, we need to add all the numbers, put them in standard form, and put the numbers in the table. Let’s take an example: 8 x 1000 + 9 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 6 x 1. As we can see, we have to multiply 8 by 1000. 8×1000 = 8000. And now we have to multiply 9 by 100. 9×100 = 900. And the same with 3×10= 30 and 6×1 = 6. After successfully doing multiplication, now we need to add all the numbers: 8000+900+30+6 = 8936.  And the final answer is 8936.

  • 5 x 10000 + 8 x 1000 + 5 x 100 + 9 x 10 + 3 x 1 = 58,593
  • 3 x 1000 + 4 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 1 x 1 = 3,471
  • 9 x 10000 + 5 x 1000 + 6 x 100 + 2 x 10 + 7 x 1 = 95,627
  • 7 x 1000 + 8 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 9 x 1 = 7,839
  • 6 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 6 x 1 = 646
  • 2 x 10000 + 9 x 1000 + 3 x 100 + 1 x 10 + 5 x 1 = 29,315
  • 8 x 10000 + 7 x 1000 + 6 x 100 + 2 x 10 + 8 x 1 = 87,628
  • 4 x 1000 + 1 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 2 x 1 = 4,172
  • 9 x 100 + 9 x 10 = 990

This concept will develop critical thinking and help kids learn how to calculate and add numbers quickly. In the above, there are a total of nine queries that have to be performed. So we have to follow the same process. Let’s understand through an example: 5×10000 = 50000, 8×1000 = 8000, 5×100 = 500, 9×10 = 90, 3×1 = 3. Now add all the numbers: 50000+8000+500+90+3 = 58,593. So the final answer is 58,593.

Convert Expanded to Standard Notation Place Value Worksheet For Grade 4

  • 7 x 10000 + 1 x 1000 + 5 x 100 + 5 x 10 + 7 x 1 = 71,557
  • 9 x 1000 + 1 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 2 x 1 = 9,142
  • 4 x 1000 + 6 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 9 x 1 = 4,679
  • 8 x 10000 + 2 x 1000 + 7 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 4 x 1 = 82,734
  • 4 x 10000 + 8 x 1000 + 3 x 100 + 6 x 10 + 9 x 1 = 48,369
  • 7 x 1000 + 1 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 3 x 1 = 7,143
  • 5 x 10000 + 3 x 1000 + 8 x 100 + 9 x 10 = 53,890
  • 1 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 6 x 1 = 176
  • 2 x 1000 + 9 x 100 + 4 x 10 = 2,940

Now the numbers are more complicated, but we do not need to worry about it. If we know how to solve, meaning if we know the procedure, we can solve numbers. For better understanding, let’s take an example: 7 x10000 = 7000, 1 x1000 = 1000, 5 x100 = 500, 5×10 = 50, 7×1 = 7. Now add the total: 7000+1000+500+50+7 = 71,557. So the final answer is = 71,557.

  • 7 x 10000 + 7 x 1000 + 2 x 100 + 5 x 10 + 9 x 1 = 77,259
  • 4 x 100 + 8 x 10 + 3 x 1 = 483
  • 6 x 10000 + 3 x 1000 + 9 x 100 + 5 x 10 + 7 x 1 = 63,957
  • 8 x 10000 + 8 x 1000 + 1 x 100 + 7 x 10 +4 x 1 = 88,174
  • 1 x 10000 + 4 x 1000 + 5 x 100 + 8 x 10 + 1 x 1 = 14,581
  • 6 x 1000 + 1 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 6 x 1 = 6,176
  • 3 x 100 + 3 x 10 = 33
  • 9 x 1000 + 4 x 100 + 2 x 10 + 7 x 1 = 9,427

So we hope kids have understood the process, and now they know how to solve these exercises. And we assume kids will solve this exercise without any help. And they will create their own questions and solve them on their own. If kids face any issues during the assessment, they can see the examples above.
