Greater and Less Than Flashcards

Children are taught the concept of mathematical operations through several different techniques. There are several exercises used to do so. One such popular exercise for young kids is determining whether one number is smaller or greater than the other one. It is one of the few basic concepts that a kid must understand before he can perform advanced mathematical concepts. To know that 1 is smaller than 5 or 500 is greater than 490, is important.

One such case where it’s important is while performing subtraction since is known that we generally subtract a smaller number from a bigger number. Thus it is an important concept for kids to understand and learn.

Greater and Less Than Flashcards

This week we bring to you a simple, fun, and engaging activity for your students to understand and determine which of the numbers is greater or less than the others. The flashcards consist of numbers 1 to 100. Additionally, there are two cards with the greater than and the lesser than symbols. The greater than symbol (>) is used between two numbers if the number on the left side is greater than the number on the right-hand side. Similarly, the lesser than sign (<) is used when the number on the left side is smaller than or lesser than the one on the right side.

Greater and Less Than FlashcardsDownload the flashcards and print these out. Cut the pieces individually and use them in a group activity at school. You can make more than one copy of the flashcards for more kids to participate. Ask the students to select two numbers from the flashcards and then place the greater than or lesser than sign between them (whichever is right). Be sure to clarify the objective of the task and that they understand the signs properly as many kids have difficulty identifying these. Since the flashcards are from one to one hundred, it is required that students be known with the concept of place values as it is only with that that one can determine the magnitude of numbers.

You can also assign it as homework. Ask the students to make copies of the signs of making one of their own and use the flashcards and put them in the correct order by pasting these into their scrapbook.
