SAVING THE TIGER

India’s national animal, the tiger, remains under severe threat. More than a year after the disappearance of the tigers from Sariska became public, the lord of the jungle has vanished from 50% of its historical habitats in Bihar and Rajasthan. This report on the Tiger tragedy was provided by Wildlife Institute of India (WII). Even in the Shivalik, the tigers have vanished from 30% of their areas.

This threat to the tiger arises both from poaching, as well as loss of habitat and prey species. The tiger is a species most endangered by illegal International trade. The World Wide Fund for Nature has released its list of the world’s ten most in-demand species which are bought, sold, smuggled, killed or captured for trade purposes. The list includes tiger, Asian rhino, elephant, sawfish, porbeagle shark, spiny dogfish and European eel.

A surge in rhino poaching over the last few years is also taking its toll on their population, while rampant ivory sales in Asia and Africa pose a threat to elephants. The only positive story to emerge was that of the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve in India, where tiger population has been found at a healthy 112 in just 500 square kilometres.
