In a village, a trader lived who traveled to various places to sell his goods.
He always loaded his goods on the back of his donkey.
Upon arriving at a certain village, he would unload the donkey and cover it with a lion’s skin.
Then he would let the donkey graze in the nearby fields.
The villagers mistook the donkey for a lion and were too frightened to chase it away.
As a result, the donkey became strong and healthy, able to carry heavy loads without tiring.
The trader’s business thrived, and the donkey was happy as well.
One day, the trader loaded his donkey as usual and set off for business. He passed fields of rice and barley near a neighboring village.
Just like always, he unloaded the donkey, draped it in a lion’s skin, and let it graze.
A villager spotted what he believed to be a lion entering the fields.
Terrified, instead of scaring it away, he rushed to the village to alert the locals.
saying, “Be careful! A lion has escaped from the forest and is hiding in the fields. Stay away or be cautious!”
The village elders decided to take action and drive the supposed lion away.
All the villagers took weapons from their homes and went to the fields together.
They surrounded the fields on three sides and made loud noises to scare the lion back into the forest.
The donkey, happily grazing under the lion’s skin, didn’t pay attention at first. But when the people came closer and the sound of drums grew louder,
Suddenly, the donkey panicked and started braying.
The villagers were surprised to hear a lion braying. Soon, they realized the truth:
It wasn’t a lion or any wild animal making the sound, but just a donkey in a lion’s skin.
Angered and confused, they quickly turned on the donkey, attacking it with sticks and logs.
When the trader returned from selling his goods, he was heartbroken to see his donkey in such a miserable state.
With a heavy heart, he took the donkey home, feeling deeply saddened by the ordeal.
Moral: Deception leads to consequences; honesty is always best
The Lion’s Skin reminds us that pretending to be someone you’re not doesn’t end well. Sooner or later, the truth comes out. It’s always better to be yourself than to act like something you’re not. Being real is what truly matters, not wearing a fake mask to impress others.
