A long time ago, there lived a sage with his wife in the middle of a jungle.
The sage was the owner of many powerful supernatural gifts that he had achieved from hard penance and meditation.
He didn’t have any attraction towards worldly pleasures. But he yearned for a child of his own.
The couple was growing old, and they didn’t have any children. This made them sad.
But they consoled themselves by thinking that it was god’s will and went on with their life.
One fine day, the sage was completely absorbed in meditation when all of a sudden, something fell on his lap.
He was startled! He looked down and saw a little mouse.
Then he heard the disappointed cry of the eagle flying above his head.
It was not very difficult for him to figure out that the little mouse had slipped off the eagle.
He felt for the little creature that clutched to his thumb.
He thought for a while and said, “You little being, from now on, you will stay with me.
I promise I will keep you safe and provide for you.
But I, with my magical powers, will transform you into a human being.
So that it will be easier for you to live with us, we will also be pleased to have you as our child!”
The little mouse nodded in approval.
Then, with some magical incantation, the sage transformed the little mouse into a beautiful little girl.
She had gleaming dark eyes and beautiful dark hair.
The sage smiled as his heart filled with love for his daughter.
He went inside with the girl to tell his wife about the whole incident. His wife, too, fell in love with the beautiful child.
She said, “You have given her a life as a human being, that makes you her father.
And I will give her my love and nurture her. She is our daughter, and no one can change that.”
After this, the little girl and the old couple lived happily for a few years. The girl grew up into a beautiful woman.
She was now eligible for marriage. But her father was struggling to meet her expectations of a perfect match.
He first called upon Lord Surya, the Sun god. The god was ready to marry her, but the girl refused.
She said, “Father, I am sorry. But I can’t marry him. He is always so harshly warm! How can I live with him?”
Lord Surya was not offended by this at all.
He understood the problem and therefore suggested that Lord Varuna would be a good match for her.
So, the sage called upon Lord Varuna and requested him to marry his daughter.
Lord Varuna agreed, but then again, the girl refused.
This time she said, “I apologize for this refusal. But I am really scared of the thunder.
Rain makes everything mushy and cold. How can I stay with someone like this?”
Lord Varuna was very calm and understanding.
He suggested to the sage that Lord Pavandev would be a good match for her.
As he is the god of wind, he would dry away all mushiness, and he is not very scary or violent.
The sage took the suggestion and called upon the god of wind.
Lord Pavandev approached and, like the other two god’s agreed to marry the girl.
But unfortunately, this time as well, the girl refused to get married. She said humbly, “My apologies, Father, but he is very restless!
He won’t stay in one place. I will have to move with him every minute. That will be so exhausting!”
Lord Pavandev understood the problem and suggested to the sage that he should ask Lord Parvaat to marry his daughter.
After all, he is strong and static. So that this will save the girl from the trouble of moving.
When the sage told Lord Parvaat about his daughter, he agreed. But the daughter refused again.
She said, “Lord Parvaat is so huge and so strong.
His gigantic physique intimidates me. I cannot marry him, Father!
Hearing this, Lord Parvaat said, “Good sage, as you have told me, your daughter was originally a mouse.
So, she cannot be matched with any god or human.
She must marry a mouse. Because he will only be the best match for her.”
The sage realised his mistake and transformed his daughter back into a mouse.
And he convinced the mouse living on the huge mountain nearby to marry his daughter.
The daughter finally approved of the mountain mouse as her husband. And they got married with the blessing of all the gods and the couple.
Moral: Be true to who you really are.
In the end, the sage’s daughter proved that wisdom isn’t inherited but earned through courage, kindness, and clarity of thought. Her actions reflected the values her father taught, showing that true strength lies in character. Her journey left behind a legacy of grace, inspiring others to follow the path of wisdom.
