Once, a young boy was responsible for watching over the village sheep as they grazed on the hillside.
He often felt bored and wanted to have some fun. Feeling bored, he came up with a playful and bad idea to trick the villagers.
The boy started shouting, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!”
When he cried out, the worried villagers hurried up the hill to protect the sheep from the supposed wolf.
However, upon arrival, they found no wolf at all.
The boy found it hilarious and laughed at the villagers’ angry expressions.
The villagers scolded him, saying, “Don’t scream ‘wolf,’ boy, when there is no wolf! It’s not right!”
Frustrated, they turned and walked back down the hill.
Later, unable to resist, the boy pulled the same trick again. He yelled, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is after the sheep!”
Once again, the villagers rushed up the hill to chase away the wolf.
But when they got there, they discovered there was no wolf, which made them very upset.
They warned him sternly, “Only call for help when there’s a real wolf! Don’t cry ‘wolf’ when there isn’t one!”
Muttering in annoyance, they walked back down the hill.
Eventually, a real wolf appeared near the flock.
The boy was frightened and shouted as loud as he could, “Wolf! Wolf!”
But this time, the villagers suspected he was just playing another prank.
They believed he was being dishonest once again, so they didn’t come to his aid.
As the sun began to set, the villagers grew anxious because the boy hadn’t returned with the sheep.
They climbed up the hill to check on him and found him in tears.
He cried, “There truly was a wolf here!” The flock is gone! I cried out, ‘Wolf!’ but you didn’t come to help!”
An elder from the village approached and comforted him, saying, “No one believes a liar, even if they tell the truth!”
The boy understood that his earlier tricks had led to this moment, and he realized the importance of honesty.
Moral: Lying breaks trust; even if you’re telling the truth, no one believes a liar.
