Once upon a time in a beautiful mountain called Kailash lived a powerful god named Lord Shiva. He was the king of all gods and had a lovely wife named Parvati. One day, while Parvati was taking a bath, she wanted someone to guard the door and not let anyone in. So, she created a little boy out of the sandalwood paste she used for her beauty rituals.
She named him Ganesha. Ganesha was cheerful and full of energy. When Shiva returned home, he was surprised to find this little boy blocking the entrance. Ganesha, not knowing who Shiva was, stood firm and said, “You cannot enter! My mother told me to guard this place!”
Lord Shiva, thinking he could simply walk past, tried to enter. But Ganesha stood his ground. This made Shiva very angry, and he, not knowing Ganesha was his son, took out his trident and, in a moment of rage, cut off Ganesha’s head.
When Parvati heard the commotion, she rushed out and was heartbroken to see her son. She was so sad that she told Shiva he had to bring Ganesha back to life. Shiva, feeling guilty and loving, promised to do so.
To bring Ganesha back, Shiva ordered his followers to find the head of the first living creature they could find. They searched and found an elephant. They brought the elephant’s head back, and Shiva placed it on Ganesha’s body. Ganesha opened his eyes and smiled!
From that day on, Ganesha became the God of Wisdom and Prosperity. He is often worshipped at the beginning of new ventures, and people pray to him for success and happiness.
Why We Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?
To celebrate Ganesha’s return, Parvati and Shiva decided to have a grand festival every year. This festival is known as Ganesh Chaturthi. During this time, families make beautiful idols of Ganesha, decorate their homes, sing songs, and share delicious sweets, especially modaks, which are Ganesha’s favorite!
And so, every year, people celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with joy and love, remembering the wonderful story of Ganesha and his adventures.
