Subtraction is one of the four foundational operations in mathematics other than addition, multiplication, and division that kids are taught from a very young age. To subtract is to find the difference between two numbers. The process of subtraction is denoted by the “-” sign hence if we are to subtract a number ‘b’ from a number ‘a’ it would be written as a – b. Students are taught subtraction at school in different ways. At first, they are presented with several takeaway problems.
One might ask them to tell how many apples are left in a bowl if we take three of the five away. Another common way to teach subtraction is to use fingers. Children use fingers to perform basic operations such as addition and subtraction and it is through these foundational practices that they develop the ability to solve the numerical problem that they need to solve as they move to first grade and above.
This week, we bring to you this Christmas-themed subtraction worksheet for you to use in class or during your homeschooling sessions to test your student’s or kid’s ability to subtract. This worksheet not only focuses on testing their subtraction skill but it would also test their problem-solving and reasoning ability. There are five different sheets in the worksheet each of which consists of six different questions.
Given on the top of each sheet is a box that contains images that are related to the festival of Christmas. Each of these images has a value that is written next to it. Students have to refer to this value and find the difference in the value of the images provided in each question.
Children at a young age are very competitive in nature. They find such exercises more fun as it challenges their mind. While this is a relatively easy exercise, the addition of the images allows their mind to work a little more which helps ensure that they pay full attention to the task hence making fewer mistakes. Download, print, and provide the students with the worksheet. Do not tell them what to do and let them figure it out by themselves. If they do not understand be sure to help them out by demonstrating what needs to be done.
Download the worksheet and test your student’s reasoning and subtraction skills. We provide new educational content daily on our website. For more subtraction-related worksheets or other content, be sure to visit our website.
